Frog Lunch

It's a froggy Flashback Friday today! I fell in love with this little apple frog the first time I saw him. I can't remember where it was, but I think I've traced the source to here. Mine doesn't look anywhere near as impressive as the original, but it went down a treat just the same!

My apple frog sat on a bed of 2 minute noodles and had carrot feet, cherry tomato and sultana eyes held in place with raw spaghetti. Everything was hand carved.
This lunch came about because Miss M went to have a drink from our water tank and started freaking out. I thought she might have stood in some ants, but then I found the frog in the cup she was using. Ahh, welcome to life in Australia, my love! After her little melt down we played with the frog a little and then of course I had to try to incorporate it into a lunch. I'd seen this little guy and wanted to try it, so perfect excuse!
I also had to make a frog sandwich to match. At this stage I didn't have my awesome CuteZCute cutters so had to make do with some imagination. I can't remember where the inspiration for this shape came, but I thought it was from Lulu's Lunchbox.
Miss M took her regular yoghurt but for her snack I added some strategically cut celery to some dip. Enhanced with some FooDoodlers :-)

Fluttershy Fail Cake

Well, maybe not quite as tragic as all that, but it certainly didn't work out quite the way I had imagined.

Miss M had request a My Little Pony party this year, and the way her birthday fell she ended up with three mini parties. I shared her Rainbow Dash inspired rainbow Kindy Cakes yesterday and planned to share her Pinkie Pie party pics this week as well, but time has been against me. You'll just have to wait until next week :-) This is the cake she had on her actual birthday, shared with family.

It all started well enough with a plain sponge cake iced with buttercream icing

I was happy with the image I'd traced although the yellow was a little dark.

Then I started to peel the edible image sheet off the backing - and it cracked. . . and cracked. . .and cracked!

Kind of glad this was a practice run. A panicked call to Kath's Kakes and she talked me through the process (which is the complete opposite of the instructions given on the supplier website by the way).

Thanks to Kath's guidance I was able to salvage most of the image . . .

. . .but my icing had crusted so it didn't stick

All things considered I'm glad I'd planned to pipe Fluttershy's mane & tail to cover the edges. Miss M was still super-happy with this cake *phew*!

Tune in next week for the final of our My Little Party Pony saga!

My Little Pony Party - Rainbow Cakes

So not entirely a Wordless Wednesday today, but pretty close to it. There's *lots* of pictures:-)

Miss M requested a My Little Pony party for her birthday this year. I use the term 'party' loosely. It was her & her two best friends :-)

Sending cakes to Kindy and Rainbow Dash was the inspiration. I'd been wanting to try this cake from Not Martha for ages so thought I'd give it a mini twist.

Divide mixture

Add lots of colour

Spoon out

I ran out of green
But had a little blue leftover so added some yellow & made do.

Then I ran out of yellow *sigh*

I only piped the red to ensure complete coverage on top

Yeah - should have piped all the colours so they'd be even
Oops
From the bottom
This one worked out OK

Rice paper to decorate. Just the stuff you'd use for spring rolls, cut with a circle scrapbooking cutter
FooDoodler images

Stuck to half a marshmallow. Dipped in water the colours ran

My production line
Dipping in hot water
Some stuck nicely

Others rand

I thought they tasted Ok, but Miss M said she didn't like them. The texture was a bit wrong for her. Fair point

Piped some white icing 'clouds'
