Naughty Mint Balls (aka Reindeer Poop)

NN 2013 Mint Balls Desc

Loving Lunches and The Kids Menu have teamed up to give your classic Christmas recipes a Naughty or Nice makeover.  We have a new Naughty and Nice recipe for each day of the week - So whether you're Naughty or Nice this Christmas, we've got recipes for you!

I always remember Mum having a few Mint Logs in the freezer at home. I'm not sure why I associate them with Christmas, I don't think I was a fan of them when I was young. The original recipe was
  • 1 packet of Sunshine Malt biscuits
  • 1 tin condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup coconut
  • 1 bag peppermints (odd fellows or 2DL brand)
Crush biscuits and mints. Combine all and roll into logs.

A few years ago I made these and replaced the mints with crushed candy canes, and rolled into balls. When I took some to work someone said with the candy canes they looked like Reindeer Pooh, so that's what I call them now ;-D

I use a blender and crush to a powder. It's nice to leave a few smallish lumps, but remember it has to be fine enough to roll into balls.

I also replaced the malt biscuits with plain chocolate ones.

And added a pack of milk chocolate bits. Stir all your dry ingredients together.

Then stir in your condensed milk.

This is where you might want to get your hands dirty. If you don't want to spend the next half hour licking your hands, you can dampen them with a cloth.

Roll into balls and coat. Be careful not to make your hands too wet like I did.

I would usually coat in coconut coloured with a few drops of food colouring. I find it cleaner to do this in a zip lock bag - and Miss M likes to give the bag a shake too.

I bought these tubes thinking they were mini Christmas M&Ms. I thought they would make a wonderful coating and add some extra texture to the balls. They turned out to be regular size ones.

So into the blender with them.

I tried to make the powder not too fine so the colours would show through, but there was too much chocolate (as if there could be such a thing)

I think they worked out well, and to be honest I think I prefer this coating to the coconut.

You can store these in an airtight container on the bench, but here in central Queensland they tend to melt.

Even before you can take photos! Oh well ^-^. I'd recommend storing in the fridge, but if you want a really nice treat, store in the freezer. You can eat them from frozen if your teeth can handle it.

Here's the updated recipe.
