Popcorn - More than Just Salt & Butter (Savoury Edition)

I mentioned the other day that I'd experimented a little with some different salts to go with my Kambrook Flutter Butter Popcorn Maker. This day I buttered my pre-popped popcorn and flavoured them up. Here's some of what I found to be the best.

On a side note I found these cute little patty cups at my local kitchen supplies Highland Homewares. I think they make perfect little popcorn cups and would be fabulous if you were planning a movie themed party, or a 'Ready to Pop' baby shower ;-) You can order from their website or pop in & say hi. If you are lucky enough to wander in, try one of their Redskin Macarons - divine! You can also send them some Loving Lunches love on Facebook here. These cups hold about 1/2-3/4 cup popped corn.

I didn't think I had an allegiance to any particular brand of herbs & spices, but after pulling out everything in the pantry (for curiosity sake, really) it appears Masterfood must have been on special at one time. Most of these mixes are available across multiple brands but I cannot verify the flavours of those I haven't tried yet.

Mexican Chilli:
This mostly paprika based spice is always in our cupboard and I use it regularly to make Mexican mince which we then use in wraps and stacks. I have used it with steak and chicken, but we do keep turning back to mince as a staple. Here it gives a lovely kick to the popcorn. While I quite like this one, hubby prefers the Cajun. . .

Cajun (Hot):
This is one of hubby's favourites, hence the giant jar. I find it a little bitey myself, but then again I'm not terribly adventurous when it comes to heat in my food. This spice is salt & again paprika base. I'm no aficionado, but I'm thinking it's the fennel in this that turns me off a little

Garlic & Mixed Herbs:
What a match made in heaven! I love garlic & herb bread. Especially when it's crunchy & buttery. . . just like popcorn! I didn't add parmesan to this like I have seen kicking about online, and at times I have been known to add some extra mixed cheeses to my garlic bread, but if I'd popped the corn fresh & everything was piping I certainly would have been more tempted to do so.

Chicken Salt:
While I haven't found the exact chicken salt that the cafes use on their chips, this one is at least something a little different from regular table salt. I tend to use it a lot more than regular salt on most things these days, just for something a little different. If you have some of this kicking about your pantry, do try it on some popcorn. I tend not to use regular salt on my popcorn now if this one is about.

Popcorn Salt:
I'd heard a rumour that this stuff existed but couldn't find it at my two major grocers (across three stores). I was finally able to find it at a little local grocer who recently re-opened. I realise their range varies greatly between stores, but if you're having trouble finding this at Coles & Woolies, like I did, try your local IGA. This is quite a sweet salt and gives you the closest to an 'at the movies' popcorn that I've found. It may just be the pregnant lady talking here, but if you are up for something a little different try this with coconut oil on your popcorn. Quite a pleasant surprise :-)

Regular Table Salt:
How could I go past a classic? This is still hubby's all time favourite despite me making all sorts of delectables. There's a reason things become classics - they just work. At the end of the day plain popcorn is healthiest, but if you do want a little flavour, a touch of this is all you need.

I hope you've enjoyed the little tour of my spice cupboard. Do make sure you come back on Monday for the 'Sweet Edition' to see what's hiding at the back of sock drawer pantry :-)
